Immersed in the sounds of antiquity, with tropical origins and with an eye on the fusions of 21st century music, María Elena Medina is a multifaceted artist focused on stringed instruments and voice. One of her most relevant musical experiences was being part of the show “Zaia”, from the worldwide entertainment company Cirque du Soleil.
Coming from a family of musicians from Venezuela, María Elena Medina trained as a cellist at the music conservatory “Simón Bolívar”, Caracas, with the musician and composer Paul Desenne.
At the age of fourteen she was a soloist in the “Simón Bolívar” Symphony Orchestra, currently known as one of the orchestras of “El Sistema”. In 2000 she won the first prize at the Bach-Abel International Viola da Gamba Competition in Köthen-Anhalt, Germany. She graduated at the Esmuc as a viola gambist (Barcelona, Spain) with Sophie Watillon and Jordi Savall; and as a singer with Lambert Climent and Marta Almajano. She has performed at numerous festivals in Europe and America, collaborating with ensembles, professional choirs and orchestras.
She recently completed a master’s degree in early music interpretation at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with Professor Philippe Pierlot. She is currently on tour in Spain with the Fura dels Baus production of “Carmina Burana”.
